Mr. Henri-Paul Normandin, Canada’s ambassador to Haiti, and Mr. Dominique Rossetti, Head of Aid for the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in Haiti spent a good part of the day Wednesday, touring various project worksites in the area of Léogâne. One of the projects visited was CRWRC (now known as World Renew)’s Debris Management and Economic Revitalisation in Léogâne project.

The project is part of a larger partnership between the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Léogâne Mayor’s Office funded by the Canadian government aimed at cleaning up the town; this project puts money in the hands of the local residents and facilitates the reconstruction of communities.

“Getting people’s lives back to some semblance of normalcy requires that the rubble and debris be removed. People need to re-open businesses and re-start economic activities in their communities. This project is providing the opportunity for people to do this,” explained Jean Designe Henry, World Renew’s engineer supervising the project.

World Renew staff also took the opportunity to show Ambassador Normandin and Mr. Rossetti the advancements being made in providing secure housing for Haitians who lost their homes in the earthquake. The Canadian delegation expressed great interest in the “spacious” homes that are earthquake and hurricane resistant. Just fewer than 900 homes have been built to date.

“Congratulations!” Ambassador Normandin said to the World Renew staff after visiting a work site where workers were demolishing a house and where new wooden frame homes are under construction. “Keep up the good work – with the Haitian people, for the Haitian people”, Normandin added.

The World Renew staff also received kind words of praise from Guston Jean Louis, an engineer with the Mayor’s office, in Léogâne for the work being implemented by World Renew in the area.

“I am sometimes leery to work with international organizations, but not in this case,” Jean Louis shared. “World renew is by far the best organization I have worked with –the most transparent, the most collaborative, and the most honest. Thank you.”
