The National Disaster Management Authority in Pakistan has appealed for international humanitarian assistance after monsoon rains devastated parts of south eastern Sindh province, affecting more than 5.4 million people. An estimated 1.5 million homes have been damaged, forcing over 710,000 people into temporary camps—of which more than 63% are female and children. Thousands of families are sheltered outside these camps on roadways, under open skies, and in public buildings such as government schools, basic health units and bus stops.

Through CCA, ten Canadian churches are responding to this disaster. As members of Canadian Foodgrains Bank, and with the coordination of the ACT Alliance, PWS&D is leading a project conducted through local partners, Church World Service – Pakistan/Afghanistan (CWS-P/A).

Working together, 685 vulnerable flood-affected families with receive winterized tents, plastic sheets and blankets. Through CFGB, and with CIDA’s support, food assistance was also provided during the crisis period for two month, for 2,000 of the most affected families.

The preliminary appeal is for $1.7 million. Regions of concentration include the districts of Mirpur Khas and Umarkot, where PWS&D and CWS-P/A have been working together on food security projects for the last four years. Priority is being given to vulnerable flood affected families with more dependent/non-earning family members, especially the elderly and disabled.
